Move to Improve - Calories

At my passion project we have questions to answer about nutrition.

How many calories do you need per day for boys around my age.
A average 14 year old would need around 2,200 - 3,200 calories a day. Source - Livestrong

How much protein do you need a day for a 14 year old male.
This one depends on your body weight because one kilogram for people around 14 to 18 year old will need 0.85 grams of protein for each body kilogram. so I would need around 43 grams of protein.

Source - Healthy Family

Move to Improve - My Goal

For my goal at move to improve I want to improve my overall body health like having a stronger body, having more stamina/energy and being agile. I will achieve this by doing certain workouts everyday.

English Creative Writing - Life Story in 10 Sentences

Now for my second creative writing in English I chose to write another short one and I have to write my life story in 10 sentences.

1. I was born in China although I don't remember much.

2. I spent at least one year in my country studying at school but all I could remember was falling asleep in class.

3. I moved in to New Zealand at the age of four and then started kindergarten when I was at least a month or two in and got myself my first friend.

4. I then started primary school with my first friend and primary school was where my English started developing.

5. Throughout the years of primary I got myself more friends and also my English got better and better.

6. At the end of year 6 some of my friends separated and my first friend who was also my best friend stayed together throughout our primary school years.

7. I then started intermediate school but most of my friends went to different schools but my best friend is still with me, although we didn't hang out a lot in year 7.

8. Year 8 came by and that's when I started hanging out with my best friend again and also met some new friends.

9. At the end of year 8 I separated with all my friends because I moved houses making me enrol in a different school than all my friends.

10. I now currently belong at Hornby High School with new friends and teachers.

Passion Project - Sugars in Food and Food Labels

For our third period for our passion project we had to measure levels of sugar in various foods. Most of the foods were food you would find in your lunch box.

My group took some pictures of various items and how much sugar are in the food items. The food items were a vitamin drink, energy drink (Red Bull), Peach jelly and a muesli bar.

Food Labels

For our second task we had 3 questions to answer and they are related to food labels like why is it a certain colour, what picture it has on it and what do the words mean.

The drink I chose was vitamin water which was the first picture from the top on the first task. I think the colour is red because of the colour of blood and vitamins are in your blood. There is a picture of a rain drop which looks like a blood drop instead, basically saying vitamin goes in our blood again. The word it says is vitamin drink with no special fonts, I believe they are trying to make the design simple instead of appealing.

Passion Project - Move to Improve; Foods and Nutrution

For our second period at our Passion Project we watched a video explaining what nutrition do to your body whether it's benefits or consequences.

One thing I learnt was that back then food didn't have as much vitamins which led to diseases. I learnt a lot of stuff about various nutrition but can't seem to remember there names.

One thing I want to know is what happens if you only ate healthy food in your life what will happen to your body.

Passion Project - Move to Improve; 12 Minute Run

For my Passion Project we had multiple fitness tests but our group chose the 12 minute run. I think I did pretty good because I somehow ran for 9 minutes straight even though I think I'm a short distance runner.

I completed 4 laps (400 meters a lap) in twelve minutes time and I researched online to see if 1600 meters is a average distance for people our age.

I couldn't find a distance for people our age for 1600 meters instead I found one for men who are from the 20 age range, It says 1600 meters is below average for people in that age range.

I reckon I did average for people in our age range.

English Creative Writing - Six Sentence Story

Our new task for English is creative writing. We had lot's of topic to write about and for my first topic I chose a short one just to warm up for the long ones.

Once upon a time, there was a man who was a bounty hunter. He lived in a village but disguise himself as a villager so no one would know his true identity. The man had the talent to scout out anything around him in a short period of time. However after he decided to take a break from taking bounties and then returning to his village, his village was invaded by a band of bandits. He felt anger and sadness when the village was basically gone and all the other villagers were tied up. The bounty hunter then observed his surroundings then carried out a plan to take out the bandits, then after he defeated the bandits the villagers got together then built a new home together.

English Film Study - Understand how Symbols can be used to Add meaning to a Film

For the last task this one is about how symbols can represent a meaning in films. I'm researching about the Draco Constellation.

I have decided to use Coggle for its easy interface.

English Film Study - Good Vs Evil Theme

For the second to last task we had to choose out of three themes that were in the movie. Good Vs Evil was my choice and unfortunately I only included three scenes that seems like major parts for Good Vs Evil.

I made it using a online Info graphic maker. Coggle - Mindmap

English Film Study - Understand how Characters are Developed in a Film

For the sixth task for film study we had to choose four lead characters and then understand how they reacted to challenges they faced.

For my first character it's a knight of the old code; Bowen

Characters Name - Bowen

A Challenge Faced by the Character - Draco being captured by the enemies.

How the Character Reacted - Bowen wanted to save Draco even though he was in enemy territory and none of his troops were willing to help him when he asked.

What that shows us about the Character - Bowen wanted to save an ally even though no one was willing to answer Bowen when he asked if anyone wanted to save the dragon with him. This shows Bowen will save his ally even if he is risking his own life.

Second Character will be the malicious king; Einon

Characters Name - Einon

A Challenge Faced by the Character - When the villagers were led by Bowen to storm his castle.

How the Character Reacted - Einon knew the villagers were led by Bowen and his troops were underestimating them. Einon told his troops to not underestimate Bowen.

What that shows us about the Character - Even though Einon harms his allies he also warns them about something dangerous they don't know about. I think this shows Einon does care for his allies or he just wants them alive to keep him alive or in other words he's using them as pawns.

The third character will be a peasant who escaped from Einon; Kara

Character Name - Kara

A Challenge Faced by the Character - Trying to stop Einon from killing her father.

How the Character Reacted - She begged Einon to release her father from the quarry by giving Einon reasons why. However Einon ends up killing the father then Kara tries to assassinate Einon even though he was hosting a party with all his troops.

What that shows us about the Character - I believe Kara is the type of person who will avenge anyone that is important to her even if it costs her life.

The last Character will be Draco

Character Name - Draco

A Challenge Faced by the Character - Draco trying to tell Bowen that dragons weren't at fault of Einon's Evil Nature.

How the Character Reacted - When Bowen stumbled upon Draco near a waterfall, Draco and Bowen had a fight from morning till night and Draco called for a truce between them. Draco and Bowen travelled through the night and Bowen started to trust Draco. These two then travelled together to try and stop Einon, it took Draco many days to convince Bowen that Einon was always evil once Bowen trusted Draco they both planned to storm Einon's castle with villagers they gathered but in the end these two can't always be together.

Drama - Body and Movement

This week at Drama we are blogging about what we know about Body and Movement in Acting and how Actors can use their Body and Movement.

Actors can use body gestures to express emotions and future actions. Actors can also use a certain posture to tell the audience a clue what that character the actor is.

Actors can use movement to tell the audience how the character is feeling like walking on the same pattern over and over. If actors were running desperately you would know if they were chasing something.

English Film Study - Dragonheart Timeline

The past term and this term we had various of tasks to do about the film Dragonheart. The task I'm on is to make a timeline of events in Dragonheart and giving a brief explanation of what happened.

I made this infographic using Venngage.

What Am I learning? - I'm learning how to take events from a film then writing them down and then give a brief explanation on the event.

How does this work show my learning? - I used a online infographic maker and then listed down events that I think are relevant in the film.

What am I wondering as a result of my learning? - How can I make a timeline more interesting?

English: Film study - Understanding the Importance of Setting to a Film

This week at English we had to understand the importance of a setting for a film/movie. The movie setting we're researching about is Dragonheart directed by Rob Cohen.

The setting of Dragonheart was in a European country Slovakia. I believe the director chose this location was because of the wide natural land and vast amounts of castle, perfect for a medieval theme movie. The filming for the movie began in July 1994 in Slovakia.

How were the lives of the civilians people in the film.

The lives of peasants back then was enslaved for the nobles to help them build their castle, farm foods for them and used in lots of other ways.

Nobles lives in the film was just living in luxury since you could enslave people to do your work and if they don't obey you, you could just execute them.

We see this when Einon becomes king and then use the peasants as tools for building his castle.

How did the location they chose link with the historical setting.

Slovakia was the location they chose and I believe that was actually a good location because nowadays it's just modern building, sculptures and decorations. Slovakia was different though it had lots of land and castles like I said before perfect for a medieval theme movie.

English:Film Study - Explaining Purposes of Camera Angles, Movements and Shots

Spoilers Ahead.

Two Weeks ago at English class we watched a movie which was Dragonheart, it was a movie about a knight known as Bowen. Bowen tried to hunt every dragon down believing that his Pupil Einon was corrupted by having a dragon's heart inserted into him.
However trying to find every single dragon he stumbled upon the last one without knowing and the dragon tells Bowen it wasn't the dragon's heart that corrupted Einon, but it was him self.

Wide shot of Bowen and the last dragon starting an adventure.

This is demonstrated by having the shadows and long shot with the characters signalling movement by having some type of transport whether it's legs or horses. The wide land also gives us that information.

This makes understand that this is a start of a adventure with a lot of travelling before any other encounters. This also could tell us that it's almost night time where they either travel or find a spot to rest/sleep.

The director did this to let us know that the characters will not have any battles but travelling for a long period in their time. Interactions between these two characters may also happen because they are travelling together.

This worked well by having the sun in the back and the lighting because that some how give us a hint that they are travelling without any obvious giveaways.

This reminds me of a lot of movies of a character wandering through deserts with the shadows. Angles are always not the wide shot though like it could be like the camera is looking down on the character from above.

Close-up shot of Bowen smiling after losing a friend and a chaotic battle.

We see this after Bowen storms Einon's castle to try and save his dragon friend Draco from being hidden so Einon can have immortality forever. However Bowen had to kill Draco to stop Einon's evil doings and thus the last dragon has been slain all the other dragon souls surrounded Draco's soul giving a beautiful sight to the people and a way to say farewell to Bowen.

This makes the audience think that Draco's death wasn't going to affect the world in a bad way because of the way the dragon souls went into the stars didn't give off any bad feelings and this might be the beginning of peace for characters.

The director did this to make us sad because of how Draco and Bowen travelled together, did stuff together and then get forced to seperate in the end. Einon's death wasn't really satisfying because of how Draco had to die for him to die.

This worked well with how the final battle give us mix emotions of anger and sadness because of how Einon and Draco shared a life so we didn't want Draco to die but then that means Einon will have to live. Bowen could've trapped Einon in a cage for eternity but he couldn't in the situation he was in.

This also reminds me of lots of other movies that ends like this so I feel like this is a cliche.

Low angle shot of Bowen's disadvantage against Einon

This is demonstrated by having a character on top of some one to show their dominance over the other character. Here we see Einon on top of Bowen giving him the advantage to push him onto the ground.

This shows us that having the camera looking at a character on shoulder level while having his back turnt to us means the character is usually at a disadvantage while the camera shows us the other character on top of him has the advantage.

The purpose of this is have us know who has the advantage and who has the disadvantage through a simple way that doesn't require words to understand.

Combined with the dark lighting might also help us in some way usually meaning the character is in the enemies territory.

This reminds of Obi Wan saying "I have the high ground Anakin"

Close-up shot of Einon disapointed/annoyed during his training to be a knight of the old code.

We see this when Bowen is training Einon to be a king who respects his people instead of his father who is all about greed.

This shows that Einon doesn't really care about the training as we see in the future he does what he wants when he becomes the king.

The director did this to give us a hint that Einon wasn't good to start with even though he had lessions all about being the knight of the old code.

This worked will with the happy music and mood so the director doesn't make too obvious to know.

This reminds me of other movies that gives hints to the ending in the beginning of the movie.

Social Studies: Entrepreneurs - Sam Morgan

At Social studies I have to research about a entrepreneur. Sam Morgan is the entrepreneur I'm researching about, Sam Morgan is the founder of Trademe or known as the largest internet auction website in New Zealand.

Here are the questions I have to answer

1. Name the cartoonist and give the date of publication of the cartoon.
Image result for tom scott david kirk cartoonist
The Cartoonist goes by Tom Scott but his actual name is Thomas Scott.

The date it was published was from 2007 July 2005.

Source - Image and Information

2. Name the two people and identify the techniques the cartoonist uses to show which is which.

One the right side of the image is Sam Morgan holding the sign and on the left hand side is the person who bought Trademe for seven million, David Kirk.

The Cartoonist let us tells which is which by the speech bubbles and the signs they are holding out for example the person on the left has the sale contract.

3. Describe the technique the cartoonist uses to show one person is speaking and one is thinking

The Technique the artist uses is ending each speech bubble with a different shape. For example the shape in the image is one with a pointy end commonly meaning he is speaking and the other one with multiple small bubbles going towards the character means he's speaking.

4. Give Sam's age at this time. Explain how he made his idea successful.
Sam was 23 years old when he founded trade me. He made his idea successful by having his parents help him invest his business.

5. Discuss an impact Trade Me has had on you or someone you know.
No one that I know of had used Trade Me before.

6. Web Search: Find the Tremain cartoon that featured the same event as the Tom Scott cartoon, and explain how it is different.
Digitised Image
Tremain's cartoon is after Tom scott's cartoon where Sam Morgan sells his business to Fairfax for $70mil. This cartoon shows the son's father is reading a newspaper about how Sam's father got $47mil from the Trade Me deal.

Science: Water Cycle in Action

Watching the Water Cycle in Action

Aim: To observe the basic processes of the water cycle.

Equipment: 200 mL beaker, watch glass, ice cubes, Bunsen burner, tripod gauze mat.

Method:

1. Fill the beaker with approximately 100 mL of water and place on a tripod over a Bunsen burner.

2. Fill the watch glass with a few pieces of ice and leave it on the bench.

3. Light the Bunsen burner and heat the water until it just starts to simmer. Do not boil the water.

4. Turn the Bunsen burner off and gently place the watch glass and ice on top of the beaker.

Observations:

This science experiment we had to make a artificial water cycle with ice and water.  What I saw was water in the bottom level of the beaker then in the high part of the beaker was steam. and at the top it was just ice I believe.

What really happened?

The water evaporated by the Bunsen burner which steam rose to the top of the beaker.

Important Words.

Evaporation - Liquid turning into gas form

Transpiration: Water goes from the plant then to the Atmosphere

Condensing - Water vapour turns into liquid or gas turns into liquid.

Social Studies: Fair Trading Act

At social studies we had to learn about consumers and producers. We're given a set of questions to see what we know about consumers, producers and the fair trading act.

1. What is the Fair Trading Act?

The fair trading act protects you from being misled and being treated unfairly by shops and traders. This act applies to everyone in trade.

2. What is the commerce commission's goal?

The Commerce Commission's goal is to enforce the Fair Trading Act and also provide guidance as who is in trade including whether sellers.
3. Who besides the commission is responsible for the act and can take their own legal action?
I think you are because you can make a complaint on the trader or the product to the commission.

4. What are the two groups the act applies to?

Businesses and the consumer.

Understand Your Compliance Obligations

1. What do the acts apply to?
To anyone in trade including overseas that supply goods or services in land within New Zealand

2. Does it only apply if you intend to deceive?
I think yes because the act prevents any kind of false accusations or any misleading information.

3. Whose "shoes" must the business put themselves into?
I think the business has to put themselves into the commerce commission's shoes because the commerce commission enforces the Fair Trading Act and to do that they must be in reach of the business

4. What is the commission empowered to do?
The commission enforces the Fair Trading Act preventing consumers to buy misleading products or buying it for a high price than it should be.

Reporting A business

How do you report a business?
You can make a complaint to the commerce commission if you think the business is suspicious but they get thousands of complaints so it might take time for your complaint to be processed.

Know Your Rights
Know Your Rights Fact Sheet

You would want to know your rights because you might buy something you want from a smaller business for a cheaper price but you don't know if it's are legit product or just a hand made one with poor quality. So if you bought a product you liked for a cheaper price and you're unsatisfied with it you could report that business and have them take legal action if the business doesn't want to give you a refund or anything.

Digital Tech: Television Drawing

This Wednesday at Digital Technologies we had to make a television with google drawing's shapes. The teacher said we could put a image or gif on the television screen so I chose a big You- tuber who goes by Ali-A.

I learnt that you can make all sorts of stuff with only very basic shapes like the square and circle.

Drama - Play Reflection

At drama for the past four weeks or more we were practising on how to recite plays. My group had 2 other people so we had to do a 3 actor play.

I chose a play without thinking about it for some reason and I regret doing that because the play wasn't really for all males. The play we chose was about a man trying to suicide and there was a angel named Grace trying to prevent that while a demon who name is Bez was trying to convince the angel that it's too late and no point saving him anymore.

In the first page there was a action where Jude the man who was trying to suicide lay down on Grace's lap who was me, we tried it and it was obviously awkward so we didn't do actions during the performance.

During the performance it was really awkward because my group didn't know how to start the play so we just had Jude lay down on the ground and then started the play. We only did two pages because of our group members being absent and having bad memory.

Overall it was a painful experience because of me choosing a play without even reading it first.

Health Education: Whare Tapa Wha

Whare Tapa Wha is about a house and each wall represents each well being. Spiritual, Physical, Emotional and Social.

I participated not so well in my group because the group I was in had relied on me.

It was challenging when I had to write about mental well being because I didn't know what mental well being was so I just wrote my own definition

English: Film Study - Camera Techniques

For our second film study task we had to post pictures of different camera angles I made a google drawings showing all the camera angles we were given.

They are seperated into 3 different categories and it's most likely some are wrong in the categories.

English: Film Study - Language of Visual and Sound Techniques

At English we started to study about flims, for this task we had to find definitions of certain words and I made a kahoot to the meanings of these certain words.

Note: You need two devices to play this kahoot or make a extra tab one for hosting and the other one for playing.
Each question will have a 20 second limit

Health: Assertiveness

At health I learnt how to be assertive and what does assertive means. Being assertive means being confident and sharing ideas without being aggressive.

How do I deal with conflict. I usually deal with conflict in a passive way because being aggressive is just going to make more problems.

During the Business Kete how could I keep myself calm. I probably will just try to adapt to the current situation and get prepared for any problems.

Science: Experiment - Biuret Test (Protein)

This week at science we've been trying to see which food has certain nutrients. Today we did protein, we tested out eggs and milk. Some were successful and some didn't really give any results

Aim: To test if a sample of food contains protein

Equipment: Test tube, sodium hydroxide (NaOH), copper sulfate  (CuSO4), food sample.

Method

1. Place about 2mL of the sample into a test tube and add 5 drops of sodium hydroxide

2. Add 5 drops of copper sulfate.

3. Shake the test tube gently from side to side.

Result: If the solution remains blue, then no protein is present. If the solution changes to a purple colour then protein is present in the sample.

Here are some pictures

Health: Mindfulness/ Body Cues

What did I learnt about: I learnt being mindful can help you understand the present situation so if there was a robbery you can stay calm and think calmly how to escape safely.

I also learnt that if you could understand body cues it might help someone because you could approach the person and help him if he/she is showing uneasy body cues.

Was there anything difficult to understand: Reading body cues for the first was kind of hard for me because I could only understand the simple and basic ones like smiling or crying.

When I talked to a classmate how did I know what they were feeling: I could understand some like if I say something funny they will laugh and rest I couldn't really understand that much.

How can I apply my new knowledge to the Business Kete: If I get worried or overwhelmed I could understand the current situation and try to adapt to it. If I could understand body cues I can help someone that's in my group like if they are feeling uneasy I might take over for them.

My Evidence

English: Merchant of Venice - Act 4 Scene 1

Act Four Scene One

1. The Duke believes that Shylock will claim his bond without showing mercy

2. Shylock wants to claim his bond because Antonio couldn't pay the money back in time.

3. The Duke can dismiss the court session unless the judge comes which is Portia

4. I think Portia is saying to show mercy because it's a blessing and it's the most powerful thing.

5. Shylock now has to give in to Christianity and he loses all his possessions but the money will be given to the state and Antonio

6. Antonio says to tell tales on how much he is a friend to Bassanio

7. Portia convinced Bassaino to get his ring off him where he promise never to take it off to his wife (Portia was in Disguise therefore Bassaino didn't know it was Portia)

8. Portia is trying to show as much mercy as she could so Shylock doesn't have to suffer any consequences

1. A4S1 L70-80

1. Ask the ocean to get smaller
2. Ask the wolf why he killed the lamb and made his mother cry
3. Tell the pine trees on top of the mountain to stop waving their treetops when a storm blows through them.

2. A4S1  L90-100

The example he gives goes like asking someone's possession to do something and they refuse.

I prefer Antonio's comparisons because their are simple and easy to understand but Shylock's comparisons are indeed more powerful than Antonio's.

Health Education: Interpersonal Skills for Business

What Did I learnt about: I learnt various of things like being resilient can help you in jobs and anywhere as well, being able to cope with changes can help as well.

Anything That was Difficult to Understand
It was kind of difficult to understand what being resilience is cause I thought it mean toughness physically

How did I relate to the "Who moved my cheese Video"
There was one time where I was playing a game and it was my resilient story. Long story short we never gave up on a certain activity no matter how long it took. The change was that we kept using the same strategy but we made more progress when we made a different strategy.

How could I apply my new Knowledge to the Business Kete
I could be resilient when I have a job I could like ask people if I need help without hesitating and never giving up when I fail.

Art: Reflection

On the last day of school which is today we had been given a sheet with questions related to our experience with art.

1. What did you find most challenging about the print design process?

A. Drawing Thumbnail sketches
B. Drawing a Final A5 Design
C. Transferring the image to the lino
D. Cutting the Lino with Gouges
E. Printing even Quality Prints

I found Drawing a final A5 design hard because I didn't know what really to draw and I had to think about if it was good when cut out on the lino and then printed.

2. What did you find most challenging about the painting composition process??

A. Drawing Thumbnail Sketches
B. Composing a Final Drawing for A3
C. Developing a colour scheme with three main colours
D. Mixing Colour or Mixing Lighter and Darker Tones
E. Applying Colour to the Paper

I found Drawing Sketches and painting hard because it's the same for cutting since you need something that's good for painting like having lots of colours and space but I just went with something simple or else I'll need a lot of colours.

3. What mistake did you make that taught you something?

Never draw in colouring pencils, I found out it can't be rubbed out easily like pencil

4. What was the most successful about your work?

The most successful thing about my work was it kind of was easy to cut on the lino.

5. What could I do to improve my work?

I could practice by trying more advanced stuff than the basics.

English: Merchant of Venice - Act Three, Scene Three

Act Three, Scene Three

1. Antonio believes that Shylock wants to claim his bond is because he gives money to people that haven't payed their loans to Shylock.

2. Because apparently it threatens the security of foreign merchants in Venice.

3.  I think it's because he doesn't care what happens to him and Shylock keeps on insisting claiming his bond.

4.  I think Antonio has a bit of hate towards Bassanio because he says "I hope to God that Bassaino comes to see me pay his debt" It's kind of phrase with no kindness in it

5.
-Mercy isn't really the same as forgiveness because mercy is where you forgive them but not fully forgive them while forgiveness is which you just forgive them fully.

-   It kind of depends on the situation if someone did something that you really hated you wouldn't forgive them but search for revenge so it really depends on how big the deal is.

- I think so because justice is the same thing as fairness since justice is where you do something you believe is morally right, and fairness is in justice

- I believe Shylock will have justice unless something like a law or something interferes.

English: Merchant of Venice - Act Three Scene 1-2

Act Three Scene One

1. I think it's because Shylock believes that Solanio and Salerio have a close relationship to Jessicca. Solanio and Salerio didn't report the disappearance of Jessica to Shylock

2. Tubal says these followings lines "Well, other men have bad luck too. Antonio, as I heard in Genoa-" (Modern Text Translation)

"He's had a ship wrecked coming from Tripolis.
(Modern Text Translaton)

3.  I think Shylock is looking for Lorenzo and Jessica because Jessica left with Lorenzo on a ship full of jewellery.

4. They plan to meet at the synagogue and their purpose is to take Antonio's heart because it's the deadline for the contract.

Act Three Scene Two

1. Portia wants Bassaino to think it through before choosing the casket because if he chooses wrong casket Portia can't have Bassaino's casket anymore

2. He doesn't choose gold because of a old tale involving this man called Midas where he touches everything will become gold even humans. For silver he doesn't choose it because it's the material coins are made out of and he thinks Portia worth more than just common coins and for lead I think he doesn't judge a book by its cover and it's humble.

3. I think she's trying say that when you get married to a woman, all the woman's belongings will be given to you now.

4. It depended on the caskets as well. I think what Gratiano is trying to say is that if Bassaino picked the right casket that means his fate with Nerissa would be getting married as well.

5. She sees Bassaino with a pale face while reading the letter

6. She helps by doubling or tripling the amount of ducats that Shylock needed for the contract or else Antonio's heart will be removed.

7. Because Shylock is really mad right now, having his daughter taken away from him and his money.

8. Yes I believe because Portia doesn't care about the outside of a man but the inside. Bassaino has a positive Attitude and he doesn't boast about how rich he is.
