Behaviour of Matter - Expansion

When particles are heated, they begin to move around more and the space between the particles increases, causing the substance to expand. The diagram below shows the effect of heat on particles in a solid substance. Notice that the particles are vibrating more. Because of this, they are bumping into each other and the distance between the particles increases. This means the solid will expand

Describe the effects of heat on:

1. The movement of particles - They move around more and more

2. The size of the particles - They start to expand

3. The space between the particles - The space increases 

4. The size of the substance - They expand as well

Aim:

To observe contraction in gases

Equipment: Aluminium can, scissor tongs, Bunsen burner, heatproof mat, tripod and open container of water

Method

1. Set up a Bunsen burner underneath a tripod and gauze mat.

2. Pour approximately 50-60 mL of water into your can. it should be no more than 1/4 full

3. Heat the can of water until steam is seen escaping from the top.

4. Quickly, but very carefully, invert the can as you plunge it into a container of water.

Reflection

Well the experiment was simple since all you did was heat up a can with 50 mL of water and once it's smoking you just plunge it into the container full of water upside down and it makes a small explosion on the inside.

Science - DIffusion

Monday, last week of the term we did a diffusion experiment with Potassium Permanganate. We used 2 crystals of Potassium Permanganate in a half full petri dish with cold water and then we waited for 5 minutes.

Aim: To observe diffusion in a liquid.

Equipment: Petri Dish, Water, Tweezers, A crystal of Potassium Permanganate.

Method:

1. Half fill your petri dish with cold tap water.

2. Place the petri dish on your work bench and allow the water to become settled.

3. Using the tweezers, place a single crystal of potassium permanganate in the centre of the petri dish.

4. Observe for 5 minutes.

5. Repeat the experiment using hot water

Observations:

Note: We only did cold water

The colour started getting a bit lighter over time with only two crystals.

Explanation: I guess the substance spreaded out through the whole petri dish and got less focus on one spot.

Science - Investigating State Changes

This week our science we had to observe how long it took ice to boil to 100 degrees.

Aim: To observe water as it changes state from solid to liquid and then to a gas.

Equipment: A 250 mL beaker, thermometer, Bunsen burner, heatproof mat, tripod and gauze mat, stopwatch, retort stand and clamp, ice cubes

Method: 1. Collect enough ice so that your beaker is half full and place the thermometer into it while you set up the rest of the equipment

2. Set up the retort stand and clamp alongside the tripod and gauze mat

3. Place the beaker of ice on the gauze mat and gently clamp the thermometer so that it is held upright and the scale is easy to see. The bottom of your thermometer should be low enough to still be covered by water when the ice melts, but not touching the bottom of the beaker

4. Record the initial temperature of the ice in the data table below

5.Light the Bunsen burner and start timing with the stopwatch.

6. Measure and record the temperature every minute.

7. Continue measuring and recording the temperature until the water has been boiling for 2-3 minutes

Home Eco. Reflection. - Hot Cross Buns

This week at Home Eco. we made Hot Cross Buns. I didn't to get any because I think our team completely ruined them; They looked like meatballs and we had to make a cross with our icing but instead we just poured our icing all over our meatballs.

So here are the positives and the negatives

Positives

• Apparently they tasted good
• Team of 4
• Cleaned up our mess
• Made meatballs
• Lots of meatballs for all of us

Negatives

• Made a Mess
• One of us didn't really do anything
• Didn't keep up to time

I don't have any photos or anyone in our group has, it just looks like meatballs made out of dough

Science - Distillation

This period of science we were using a bunsen burner and other equpiments to find out how much sugar were in each type of coke drinks (Orignal Coke, Coke Zero and Coke No Sugar.)

Our Aim was: To separate a solute from a solvent in a solution using distillation.

Equipment: A solution of saltwater, conical flask, heatproof mat, a delivery tube and bung.

Method:
1. Set up the equipment as shown in the diagram
2. Add approximately 50 ml of saltwater to your conical flask
3. Light your Bunsen burner. open the air hole and gently push the Bunsen burner under the tripod
4. Heat the solution until most of the solvent has been evaporated. Turn off your Bunsen burner


Last week we try to find out how many sugar was actually in different types of cokes

Our Observations 

1. Coke started shooting/bubbling up by the heat
2. Coke went into the other test tubes (Pictures Below)
3. Coke turns jet black                                                                                                    

Home Eco. - Cupcakes

Reflection

This week on Tuesday we made cupcakes with icing but I forgot to take pictures, but it came out really small and thin so I guess it didn't go well.

Positives

• We didn't make the icing correctly but we found out a way to fix it and it tasted great.
• Managed to get in a group of 4
• Was on time
• Cupcakes tasted okay

 Negatvies

• Too Small
• Icing was runny
• Didn't clean all our stuff
• Rushed

2. Julian asked August who’s your favourite character. He wanted to slide under the desk because everyone probably was looking at him. Julian asked those questions because he was into star wars as well.

3. “Just because your correct doesn’t mean you’re right” - Shirou Emiya. Either that or being kind can develop a bond between each other cause probably the teacher wants everyone to be nice to each other

4. Cause August mother kept on asking him questions and he wanted the backpack to cover him but his mum insisted to take it away from him.

6. Aversion is something you very dislike. August had a strong aversion because he doesn’t want everyone to see his face

1. She didn’t really had an reaction because all the other kids didn’t ignored him and Summer didn’t really know why so she just sat with him. They became friends because they had names that were related to the season, summer or she just felt like it.
2. So people can ask her questions about why being friends with August and the Julilan boy wanted to go out with Summer
3. Two of them are kind of in a similar situation like they have lost a family member each and they both have some type of symptom
4. I think it means that people been through the same situation will understand it while the people who haven't experienced it won't understand
5. He was annoyed cause he didn't want to go back to school that early to show someone around the school but then he felt bad for August when his little brother got scared of August and ran away
6. He feels like August can be a really good friend because they tell jokes to each other and they both laugh at each others jokes, they like to hangout with each other, tell each other stuff. So basically they both are really good friends for each other. Jack feels disgusted when he realises he been backstabbing August when August was dressed up as Scream but not Boba Fett.

In my opinion I felt like it was the right thing to do because if he didn't punch Julian, Julian would've kept on making fun and won't shut up and he might've asked his friends to make fun of August to get August out of the school.
8. For me Jack is kind and caring person for his friends but he can get off-guarded when he hangs out with the wrong people and end up backstabbing his friends without realising.
9. August will probably react like Julian deserved the punch because August didn't really like Julian in the first place. This will probably have little effect on their friendship like a closer bond.

1. She probably photo-shopped August out of the picture was because she felt like it ruined the school photo.

2. I believe Julian's mother just wants to get rid of stuff that she thinks that can affect Julian's school in a bad way.

3. I disagree because Beecher Prep is not an inclusion school and August needs to learn social skills or else in his adulthood he will have alot of problems

5. Justin was just stressed about meeting Via/Olivia's parents. His nervousness showed by his tics popping out and the meeting went great by having Justin telling the parents about his hobbys and past.

6. Each greeting has a meaning like Via is a kiss to a cheek representing his lover, August is a fist pump which young kids do to each other, Via's mother is a hug because is not too formal and the dads is just a handshake which is not too formal tooo

7. Well it might've been a good idea because some kids who get scared easily will leave Jack alone but kids that get cocky and such can just start spreading rumours about Jack and Justin

8. Via feels bad because she was born normal without any problems unlike August who had to deal with everyone because of his face and she isn't right because you couldn't do anything about August getting the syndrome

1. August was scared because he never had a actual sleep over and he will be missing his parents for two days.

2. Eddie is basically a grown-up verison of Julian but Julian is a bit more nicer than Eddie and Eddie's character is someone who messes around with someone who is weaker and have problems with their live. On Julian on the other side is someone who tries to get rid of someone without physical being involved

3. August relationship has changed big time so basically it went from who that disgusting guy to this awesome little guy

4. August definitely deserve the medal not only he has ignored him getting bullied but he made other peoples true colors come out like Jack, Amos, Miles or just his friends has become nicer and more caring which the school is aimming for.

5. August at the beginning of the book was just a child who was scared to show his face to anyone but at the end August grew up so much that he could now take insults and can be comfortable with his face in public. His friends, family, teachers and friends of friends contributed to this change

6. My favourite character was Jack Will, he had a huge impact on this story, being August first friend at beecher prep and he was the reason why August got more friends. Jack and August become friends which lead to socializing and August didn't really socialize with anyone apart from his family.
